Attributes of God ~ a Book Review

Book title: THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD
Author: ARTHUR W. PINK
Genre: CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY
Pages: 168

A.W. Pink’s “The Attributes of God”  is an incisive and profound explication into the character and nature of the Christian God. Pink has remained masterfully deep in theological understandings regarding God’s attributes like His omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence, and immutability. Each chapter deals with only a single attribute and is opened for meaning and significance. Pink is expressly scriptural and devotional. His arguments for that matter run from the text of scriptures to their implications. Further, he reflects on the ways and means by which divine attributes affect one’s faith and understanding in regard to God. He makes all this material so clear that it would quite be within the reach of any person who, though he had never known the theology, now wanted to get to the bottom of it, and of any person who has lived a life of faith and wanted more depth.

One of the real strengths of the book is Pink’s ability to balance theological depth with pastoral concern. He writes not merely to inform but to inflame more love and reverence for God. Pink wanted to urge his readers toward the practical implications of things known about God and what living in light of the things known looks like. His writings are so full of reverence and awe that the reader is called to worship God more deeply, even as he stares wide-eyed at the infinite qualities of God. It is true that Pink exhaustibly and sensitively uses the Scripture in the grounding of a really solid biblical background to his theological musings. Now, this will effectively better ground the reader’s faith in the realities of the Bible, which will make this book useful for personal and group studies.

Still, others, however, will sometimes find the tone all through the book to be very intense. Most assuredly, Pink has not been shy to refer to the harder parts of God’s nature, including His sovereignty and justice. To some, who were just not used to these types of very intense theological works, this could sometimes be very overwhelming. With all his knowledge of the court environment, “The Attributes of God” would still claim a read from him or anyone else prepared to take a perception of the exact person of God and what his attributes are. Rather than being content, however, with a shallow presentation of the Divine, Pink insisted that his readers come along with him into acquaintance with a fuller vision of God through the Bible. This book is a timeless theological treasure that continues to inspire and fill its reader with knowledge as he or she walks with God.
