The Hiding Place ~ Corrie Ten Boom

This book found its way into my hands at a season of life where I did need a Hiding place.

It was one of those providential moments where the verse is true, God becomes an ever present help in time of need.

The book revolves around the Nazi occupation of Holland in world war two. A picture is painted of a small, Christian family’s response to this great change.

It is a book that touches on major themes of life. The highs of love and lows of heartbreak. The detours of war and the consistency of family. The sovereignty of God and the fickleness of humanity! The ecstasy of miracles and the gloom of hard providence. This is, at its heart, a human book, for human readers!

In this account the characters come alive. Mr Ten Boom, the old father has left a deep impression of what unfailing love looks like. From faithfully serving a wife through sickness, to daily reading the Bible to his family, a chapter a day  for fifty three years! His is an example many young men like myself will benefit from.

Corrie in many ways represents the Christian we are, whilst Betsie her sister is the Christian we wish to be! They are juxtaposed quite masterfully and the lessons to pick from both are numerous.

The plot is steaming of God’s masterful hand. In more ways than one, we are left actively acknowledging God’s presence and power! The theme of christians’ response to pain, suffering, injustice and reconciliation are clearly highlighted. God, being at the centre of it all.

This is a book worth reading for all christians. It models what only experience and age can teach!
