I remember singing the song Trust and Obey back when I was just a little girl. Back then, it was just a song, yet the reality of trust and obedience was made alive as I slowly began to walk with the Lord.
It’s nothing new to know that the Lord requires us to obey Him and put our trust in Him; this is evident throughout Scripture. Yet at other times, this trust or surrender doesn’t come as easily as it is said. Maybe it’s because it calls for a certain giving up on our end, one that may not come so naturally. But isn’t this the whole point of trusting and surrendering? To let go of control and leave it to the One who is faithful, the One who is capable of much more than we can do?
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.
I am slowly learning that sometimes we might know the Lord in all His splendour, glory, and character, yet act like we do not know Him at all when suddenly there’s little we can control. It might be easy to forget the Lord we serve, especially in seasons that take a blow to us. But it is in such seasons that the Lord, in His mercy, is very much present.

He is God, and He is sovereign. Part of being His creation means that we are to live under His sovereign will and trust Him. Yet sometimes, because of our rebellion, we’ll have to return to this truth through a rigorous ride. Like the Israelites, Yahweh would have to remind them over and over again, through the downfall of their great political systems, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the long journey through the wilderness before the Promised Land, that He alone must be their ultimate hope. Their part in the covenant was to trust in Him and remain faithful always.
For how beautiful is it to be held in the hands of a loving Father. He who orders our steps, who lovingly calls us back to Him, who requires that we shall only but trust in Him; that we shall loosen our desires to take up our own will and allow that He may be our ultimate hope.
For how precious it is to walk alongside a great Shepherd, He whose staff and rod comforts us, who requires that we walk in obedience to Him. For this very obedience is an act of trust: to choose that He orders our steps.
So, beloved, in this journey of faith, I pray that we may be encouraged to walk in obedience to our Father and to trust Him always. Whether today, when we may have some assurance of what lies before us, or even for the tomorrow we know not yet. For even tomorrow,we will have to live and God will be there then, as much as He is now, yours is only to trust.
Deuteronomy 10:12-16
And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it.Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations—as it is today.Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer.
